Grapplers win, lose at tourney by David Lias The Vermillion Tanager grapplers experienced both victory and defeat at the State A Wrestling Tournament, held Friday in Sioux Falls.
Vermillion's 130 pound wrestler, Adam Koller, lost his first match, won his second match, but lost his third match.
Justin Griffith, in the 135 pound class, won his first match, but lost his second and third matches.
Jared Thedorff lost twice by the close scores of 7-8 and 7-9 in the 145 pound class.
Ray O'Connor, Vermillion's heavyweight wrestler, placed eighth by winning 2 and losing 3 matches.
"We wrestled very well and easily could have had four place winners," said Coach Bret Jones. "However, we couldn't seem to get any breaks to go our way.
"We lost five matches that we were winning in the third period," he added. "Ray O'Connor had an outstanding tournament, winning two matches in overtime."
Jones said all of the this year's Tanager wrestlers will return to compete next year except for Justin Griffith in the 135 pound class. Returning will be Adam Koller (30-12), Jared Thedorff (28-12), and Ray O'Connor (27-17).
The Vermillion Tanagers varsity wrestling season record this year was 9-18.
