Gymnasts finish sixth at state meet The Vermillion Tanager gymnastics team finished sixth in the South Dakota State Gymnastics meet this past weekend in Rapid City. The Tanagers entered the state meet ranked 10th from the region meets held a week earlier.
Madison ran away with the state meet title with score of 133.018 to second place Britton's score of 122.184. Rounding out the rest of the field was Wall/Kodoka third (120.784), Sisseton fourth (118.832), Stanley County fifth (118.368), Vermillion sixth (117.583), Miller seventh (115.549).
Only four teams improved their score from their region meet performances. Madison and Britton each improved by 1 point, Wall/Kadoka by 2 points, and Vermillion by 9. The rest of the field's scores were anywhere from 1-5 points lower.
"We knew we were a better team than our region score indicated," said Coach Mark Upward. "We just had to wait until we were in the same gym with everyone else to show what we could do. Anytime you improve your score by nine points in one week, there has to be some excellent routines performed and maybe even a little change in judging."
Anne Dambowy was the only place winner for the Tanagers finishing eighth on the uneven parallel bars with a score of 7.733. Lynn Lewison was just out of the top 15 at state finishing 16th on bars with a score of 7.30. Laura Gors, who did not qualify for individual competition, scored 7.6 on bars with her routine. Gors did place 30th on vault with a score of 7.8 and 19th on the balance beam with a score of 7.1.
The balance beam was not kind to the Tanagers Saturday, being the lowest event score (26.767) of the day for the team. Other Tanagers competing as individuals on the beam were Beth Pier (21st 7.00) and Anne Dambowy finishing 30th with a score of 6.45.
Gymnasts competing for Vermilion on floor exercise for individual honors were Megan Hovden (22nd 7.967), Anne Dambowy (24th 7.90), Beth Pier (26th 7.833), and Amber Reisdorph (27th 7.750).
