Huskies volleyball JV beats Tanagers Feb. 1 by David Lias The Vermillion JV volleyball squad was defeated by Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 14-16, 17-19 in play Feb. 1 in Elk Point.

The Tanagers made 48 of 57 serves and completed 11 aces. Leading servers were Lana Johnson, 16 of 18, with 5 aces and 13 points; Carey Engstrom, 10 of 10 with 2 aces and 7 points; and Elly Kjose, 7 of 9 with 1 ace and 4 points scored.

Vermillion completed 36 of 43 sets, with 11 assists. Kjose was leading setter, completing 34 of 40 with 11 assists.

The Tanagers made 43 of 59 attacks, with 17 kills. Attack leaders were Jackie Powell, 11 of 12 with 6 kills; Kjose, 6 of 6 with 4 kills; Engstrom, 5 of 8 with 3 kills; and Johnson, 9 of 12 with 3 kills.

Dig leaders were Engstrom with 6, Johnson with 5, Powell with 4, and Leslie Larson with 4.

"This was a good effort by the JV although we were up at the beginning of both games," Coach Jennifer Cholensky said. "The girls played hard. With fewer mental errors, they would have been able to finish the match differently."
