Illness, injuries lead to wrestling losses by David Lias A smaller than normal Vermillion wrestling squad put up its best struggle at the Parker Invitational held in Salem Jan. 20, but came home with four losses.
The Tanagers lost to Flandreau 21-52, were defeated by Parker 17-19, and fell to Bon Homme and McCook Central with scores of 6-70 and 27-48 respectively.
Top performers for the Tanagers were Jared Thedorff, who was 4-0 with 3 pins, Elliot Hasse, who was 3-1 and Adam Koller, who was also 3-1.
"We knew going in we couldn't win any meets because we were only taking seven guys," Coach Brett Jones said. "However, I thought the seven we took wrestled fairly well."
The Tanagers, he said, wrestled with some intensity and looked for some individual success.
"We are missing a number of individuals due to mono, the flu and injuries," Coach Jones said.
He added that the team is hoping to get healthy and have a good Region 2A Sioux Falls Roosevelt Feb. 11-12.
"We hope to send five or six wrestlers to the state (tournament)," Jones said.
