March is 'Music in our Schools' month The Vermillion High School Department of Music has announced that the 1999 "Music in our Schools Month" event, VHS Bands in Concert, will be Monday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.
The concert will feature music performed by the VHS Symphonic Band, VHS Jazz-One, and Desafinado. The concert will feature music by R. Vaughan Williams, Clifton Williams, W. Francis McBeth, Herman Bellstedt, Robert Sheldon, Alex Lithgow, Denis DiBlasio, Russ Freeman and Mark Taylor. Dr. Rolf Olson, professor of trumpet at The University of South Dakota, will be guest soloist with the Symphonic Band. Admission is free and everyone is invited to attend.
The following Sunday, March 7, members of the Symphonic Band, Vermillion String Orchestra and Concert Choirs will be performing at the Ninth-Annual Evening with the VHS Music Stars. This event features soloists and performing groups from the SDHSAA Regional Solo and Ensemble Contests. Tickets for Evening With The Stars are $10, and can be purchased from any VHS music student.
The next night, Monday, March 8, the VHS Choirs will perform their 1999 "Music in our Schools Month" event, VHS Choirs in Concert. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in the VHS Gymnasium.
Special guest for the concert will be the Vermillion String Orchestra. The choirs and orchestra will be featuring works by W.A. Mozart, Percey Grainger, Simon Carrington, Edwin Ferguson, Joseph Martin, Alexandru Pascanu, and James Mulholland. As always, admission is free and everyone is invited to attend.
The following day, March 9, the band will be at the SDHSAA Region I Instrumental Solo and Ensemble Contest at USD. VHS Jazz-One and Show Choir will be performing at the Coyote Jazz Festival at USD on March 16 and at the Northeast Jazz Festival in Norfolk, NE on March 30.
