Roundup of Vermillion freshmen volleyball play Victory at home
The Vermillion freshmen Tanagers were victorious over the Alcester-Hudson Cubs 15-11, 15-12, in volleyball action Jan. 25 in Vermillion.
Outstanding players for Vermillion were Karen Sorenson, with 12 points, and 7 ace serves; Mary Nelson, with 5 points; Meggie Donnelly, with 8 ace assists; and Carey Engstrom, with 4 kills and 8 digs.
Tanagers and Huskies tie
The Vermillion freshmen volleyball team could only tie the freshmen Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies in play at Elk Point Feb. 1.
Vermillion lost the first match, 4-15, but followed up with a win, 15-5, in the next match.
Leading the Tanagers' efforts were Donnelly, with 8 ace assists, 5 points and 4 ace serves; Engstrom, with 3 kills and 2 digs; Sorenson, with 2 kills, 9 points and 4 ace serves; and Ashley Thompson, with 2 kills.
Yankton victorious
The freshmen Tanagers wrapped up their season against Yankton Feb. 8 in volleyball action at Vermillion, but the home court advantage wasn't enough to bring the team a victory.
Vermillion was defeated by Yankton 7-15, 10-15.
Leading performers for Vermillion were Sorenson, with 5 points, 3 ace serves, 4 kills and 7 digs; Nelson, with 4 points and 3 ace serves; Donnelly, with 4 points and 8 ace assists; Thompson, with 7 digs and 1 kill; and Engstrom, with 7 digs and 1 kill.
The freshmen Tanagers' closed their season with a record of 9-4-2.
