Swopes second in Tri-State tourney The Vermillion Swops sixth-grade girls participated in the Seventh Annual Tri-State tournament in Sioux Falls, Jan. 29-30, and brought home second place trophies.
In first round action, Vermillion played SF Ruters/White, girls from Axtell Park Middle School. Jumping out ahead 8-2 in the first quarter, the Swopes hit a cold spell in the second quarter and held a 13-11 lead at the half. Coming back strong in the second half, the Swopes pulled away and moved into the semi-finals with a 24-15 win.
Saturday morning, Vermillion was matched with the Winner Mystic. A see-saw battle in the first half resulted in a Swopes' 10-8 lead. In the third quarter the Swopes were able to find the basket and scored 11 points to take a 21-15 lead. Despite a strong scoring attack by Winner in the fourth quarter, the Swopes advanced to the championship round with a 30-28 win.
In the championship game, the Swopes found themselves playing SF Force, a team that earlier in the year had defeated them by 1 point in double overtime. With neither team leading by more than 3 points coming in the fourth quarter, the Force got hot and scored 10 unanswered points. The game ended with a 26-15 Force advantage.
