Tanager JV downs Dakota Valley 47-37 The VHS JV Tanagers downed the Dakota Valley junior varsity Panthers 47-37 in boys basketball Feb. 9 at North Sioux City.
Jeremi Cowman scored 15 points with 3 of 4 three-point baskets; 3 of 6 two-pointers, and 3 steals.
"Jeremi has been playing consistant all year," said Vermillion JV Coach Lance Luitjens.
The Tanager JV jumped ahead 16-6 after the opening period, led 27-17 at halftime, and then led 40-33 going into the final period.
"It was another great 'team' win," said Coach Luitjens. "The JV is becoming a nice, well-rounded ball club."
In the first quarter, Bo Nelson ignited an early lead with 3 layups and 2 assists and Cowman had 5 points, Brown 3, and Hogen 2, to set up a 10 point margin which was maintained throughout the game.
Vermillion JV improved its season mark to 11-4, while Dakota Valley fell to 5-9.
Vermillion JV connected on 3 of 6 three-pointers and sank 8 of 12 free throw tries. The Tanager JV sank 18 of 40 field goals, while Dakota Valley was 12 of 36 from the field. Dakota Valley hit 1 of 4 three-pointers and hit 12 of 21 free throw attempts.
Several significant individual efforts contributed to the win.
"Derrick Brown's control of the offense was again exceptional, contributing 5 assists," Coach Luitjens said. "Tim Russel played great defense both halves."
