Tanagers couldn't break Huskies' lead The Vermillion Tanagers were defeated by the Elk Point-Jefferson varsity Huskies 73-66 in boys basketball Feb. 16 at home as the winners held the lead after each quarter.
Doug Hanson scored a game high 36 points and also had 8 rebounds. EP-J's Matt Hammitt had 33 points while Lucas Klumper scored 11 points and had 11 rebounds.
The Tanagers fell behind 22-15 after the opening period, trailed 35-31 at halftime, and then trailed 54-47 after the third period.
In the first quarter, EP-J's Matt Hammitt knocked down three 3-pointers, leading to 15 points which contributed to a 22-15 first quarter lead.
The loss dropped VHS to a record of 7-9, while EP-J improved to 12-6.
VHS hit 4 of 19 three-point attempts and sank 10 of 14 free throw tries. The Tanagers connected on 26 of 54 from the field, while EP-J was 29 of 48 from the field. EP-J made 5 of 17 three-point attempts and hit 10 of 13 from the line.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual performances in defeat.
"Beau Blouin had 14 points and 9 rebounds," said VHS Coach Troy Terronez. "Nick Mayer had 4 steals and 5 assists."
