Tanagers lose to Alcester-Hudson by David Lias The Vermillion Tanagers fell to Alcester-Hudson 11-15, 15-11, 8-15 in varsity volleyball action held in Vermillion Jan. 25.

Vermillion made 60 of 70 serves, or 86 percent, with 7 aces. Leading servers were Amanda Iverson, 13 of 15 with 2 aces and 10 points; Shorey Tuetken, 12 of 14 with 3 aces and 7 points; Lana Johnson, 7 of 9 with 1 ace and 6 points; Melissa Rydell, 7 of 8 with 1 ace and 4 points; and Megan Tolsma, 10 of 11 with 4 points.

"Statistically, we did everything we needed to do to win this match," Coach Judy Zeller said. "The breaks just did not go our way."

Vermillion made 82 of 84 sets, or 98 percent, with 27 assists. Tuetken was leading setter, with 82 sets and 26 assists.

The Tanagers completed 97 of 121 attack attempts, or 80 percent, with 35 kills. Attack leaders were Iverson, with 52 attacks and 17 kills; Laura Burcham, with 19 attacks and 8 kills; Leslie Larson, with 16 attacks and 4 kills; Rydell, with 9 attacks and 2 kills; and Johnson, with 10 attacks and 2 kills.

"This was a hard one to sit on the sidelines and observe," Zeller said. "We really hit the ball pretty well; it just seemed we couldn't find the floor. What hurt us the most is we played their game, not our game."

Vermillion made 5 ace blocks in the match. Block leaders were Iverson, with 2 solos, 2 assists and 3 ace blocks; and Rydell, with 1 solo, 2 assists and 2 ace blocks.
