Tanagers qualify gymnasts for state meet The Vermillion Tanagers placed second in the Region II A meet last Saturday which qualifies them for the state meet this weekend in Rapid City.
The Madison Bulldogs won the meet with a score of 132.160. The Tanagers placed second with 108.425 points, while West Central (104.05), Wagner (82.8), and Dakota Valley (34.105) rounded out the field.
The Tanagers placed several girls into the state meet as individuals competing for individual honors. Laura Gors placed 3rd on beam (7.65) and 7th on vault with a score of 7.85. Anne Dambowy qualified on beam (9th-6.35), bars (6th-7.6), and floor (7th-6.8).
Also qualifying as individuals were Beth Pier on beam and floor (8th-6.6 and 9th-6.35 respectively), Amber Riesdorph on floor (8th-6.7), Meganne Hovden on floor (9th-6.35), and Lynn Lewision on bars (7th-7.35).
The Tanagers were behind West Central in points going into the last rotation. West Central scored 23.3 points on the beam, while the Tanagers scored 28.25 on vault to move past the Trojans into second place.
"We did well tonight in all events," said Coach Mark Upward. "We will have to have even better performances this weekend at state if we want to move up in the standings."
The state gymnastics meet is this weekend in Rapid City at the Stevens High School gym. The Class A competition begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13.
