Vermillion grapplers gear up for Regionals by David Lias The Vermillion Tanager varsity grapplers became prepared for the Region 2A Wrestling Tournament, which is under way in Sioux Falls, after defeating West Sioux in a meet held at Hawarden, IA.
The Tanagers defeated West Sioux 45-30, thanks to Adam Koller, Jared Thedorff, Chris Nelson and Ray O'Connor. They each won their matches in a meet that had 8 forfeits (4 by each school).
"For the most part, we wrestled well, but it is hard to tell when there are only five matches," said Vermillion Coach Bret Jones.
"It was nice to end the dual season with a victory. Now it's time to get geared up for regionals.
"We've been working to prepare ourselves for regionals all year, and I think the kids are ready," Jones added.
"Their attitudes are good and they understand the importance of this meet. We have a couple kids who have been to State before and several others that are wrestling well and looking forward to making the trip this year."
The Tanager wrestlers ended their regular season with a record of 9-18.
Their participation in the Region 2A Tournament began Feb. 11.
The tourney wraps up today at Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
