Vermillion loses in overtime battle After three hard-fought periods, the Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Dakota Valley High School Panthers 62-57 in an overtime battle in boys basketball Feb. 9 at North Sioux City.
The score was tied 54-54 after regulation.
Doug Hanson scored 23 points. Cory Novak added 9 points and 4 rebounds.
"Doug and Cory worked a nice inside/outside game to pick up the scoring again in the fourth quarter," said VHS Coach Troy Terronez.
The Tanagers led 18-16 after the first quarter, the score was 28-28 at halftime, and the score was 40-all after the third quarter.
"We played solid enough on the offensive end, but Dakota Valley did a good job feeding the ball inside down the stretch," said Coach Terronez.
In the second period, Beau Blouin hit a 3 pointer at the half to tie it up at 28.
In the fourth quarter, Hanson hit a deep three to send it into overtime. Vermillion then played solid defense, Blouin stole the ball, and the Tanagers had the last shot hit off the back of the rim.
The loss dropped VHS to a record of 6-8, while Dakota Valley varsity improved to 11-5.
VHS hit 6 of 24 three-pointers and sank 9 of 12 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 21 of 47 field goals, while Dakota Valley varsity was 22 of 46 from the field. Dakota Valley varsity hit 1 of 8 three-point tries and made 17 of 24 free throw attempts.
