VHS grapplers win 1, drop 2 by David Lias The Vermillion Tanager wrestling team lost to Parkston 49-13, defeated Alcester-Hudson 55-10 and lost a close match with Elk Point-Jefferson 34-37 in a triangular held Jan. 12 in Vermillion.
Outstanding performances were made by Vermillion's Jared Thedorff, who was 3-0 with 3 pins. The Tanager's Ben Parsons scored 2 pins that night, Eric Dehner was 2-0 with 1 pin, and Jason Madson set a new school record by scoring a pin in just 7 seconds.
"We came out flat the first two meets but wrestled better against Elk Point-Jefferson," Coach Brett Jones said. "We had a chance to win but couldn't capitalize on some opportunities.
"In order for us to win meets, we need to be the aggressor," the coach added. "We have been doing a good job of that lately but we needed to be more intense."
Jones said he thought Vermillion's lower weight wrestlers did a good job. "It was nice to see these kids have some success," he said. "We are starting to get some people healthy and we are looking forward to finishing the year strong."
