VHS Tanagers defeat highly ranked Huskies

VHS Tanagers defeat highly ranked Huskies by David Lias The Vermillion Tanager varsity volleyball team defeated #2 rated Elk Point – Jefferson 15-2, 18-16 in a Feb. 1 meet at Elk Point.

The Tanagers made 42 of 51 serves, or 82 percent, with 12 aces. Leading servers were Jana Prasek, who was 13 of 17 with 8 aces and 13 points; Megan Tolsma, who was 8 of 9 with 6 points; Amanda Iverson, who was 8 of 9 with 5 points; and Melissa Rydell, who was 7 of 8 with 4 aces and 5 points.

"Wow! What a match!" said Coach Judy Zeller. "We all came to play this night. Jana's serving was outstanding and our hitting was back on this night."

Vermillion completed 48 of 49 sets, and had 20 assists. Leading setter was Shorey Tuetken, with 47 sets and 19 assists.

The Tanagers were successful in 43 of 56 attacks, or 77 percent, and made 22 kills.

Attack leaders were Iverson, with 18 attacks and 10 kills; Prasek, with 12 attacks and 5 kills; and Laura Burcham, with 8 attacks and 4 kills.

Vermillion made 19 of 21 blocks. Block leaders were Rydell, with 2 assists and 1 solo block; Leslie Larson, with 1 solo block; Tuetken, with 1 assist block; and Prasek, with 1 assist block.

"Defensively, we were nearly flawless with 28 digs, led by Iverson with 7, Tuetken with 6 and Burcham with 5," Zeller said. "Our serve receive was the best it has been all year at 91 percent."

The team's next match, scheduled Feb. 8 against Yankton, will be Parents' Night. The team's record is 12-14.
