Yankton defeats Vermillion Feb. 8 by David Lias The Vermillion Tanager varsity volleyball team lost to Yankton 4-15, 3-15 in play Feb. 8 in Vermillion.
Vermillion made 16 of 18 serves, or 89 percent, and scored 1 ace. Leading server was Melissa Rydell, who completed 5 of 6 serves, had 1 ace and scored 4 points.
The Tanagers made 25 of 28 sets, or 89 percent, with 4 assists. Shorey Tuetken was leading setter, with 28 sets and 4 assists.
"We did not show up to play at this match," Coach Jodi Zeller said. "Yankton came out with all their guns loaded and we simply did not have a reply."
Vermillion completed 9 of 9 blocks, and had 3 ace blocks. Block leaders were Amada Iverson, with 2 assist blocks and 1 solo block, and Kelly Peterson, with 1 assist block and 1 solo block.
"Our serve receive really struggled and when that happens it is really difficult to get anything else going," Zeller said.
The Tanagers' team record is 12-15, and their conference record is 2-0.
They next compete Saturday, Feb. 13, at the District 8A Tournament that will be held in Vermillion.
