Accident injures two by M. Jill Sundstrom A two-car accident Wednesday, one mile east of Meckling on Highway 50, injured the drivers of both vehicles.
The accident occurred at about 9 a.m.
A 1987 Chevy Celebrity, driven by Jennifer Kaiser, 23, of Mission Hill, rear-ended a 1987 Ford pickup driven by Darrel Benson, 79, of Vermillion.
Both were east-bound and by estimation, it appeared that Benson was traveling at about 41 mph, and Kaiser was going the speed limit, said Clay County Sheriffs Deputy Andy Howe, who investigated the accident. She reported that she did not see him.
Both drivers were taken to Sioux Valley Vermillion Campus. Benson was then transferred to a Sioux City hospital. The extent of his injuries are unknown, Howe said. Kaiser was treated and released.
She was wearing a seatbelt and I believe that directly contributed to her lack of injuries, Howe said.
Both drivers were alone in their vehicles which received extensive damage. Traffic on Highway 50 was re-routed for about 20 minutes following the accident, which is still under investigation.
