Julette I. Olson, 81, Yankton, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell.

Julette Irene Lien was born May 31, 1917 in rural Irene, to Ole J. and Grace Lien. She attended Irene High School and Augustana College and taught in rural schools in Lincoln and Minnehaha counties.

She married Howard J. Olson on May 16, 1945 in the Trondhjem Lutheran Church, rural Volin. The couple farmed north of Mission Hill until retirement in 1980. Howard died on Dec. 31, 1982. Julette continued to live on the farm until moving to Yankton in 1990.

She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Sons of Norway.

Survivors include five sons: H. James, Temecula, CA, John (and wife Becky), Mitchell, Charles (and wife Carol), Grand Island, NE, Philip, Denver, CO, and Kevin (and wife Chrysa), Puyallup, WA; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters: Geraldine Jurisson, Elgin, IL, and Dorothy Van Beck of Brooten, MN.

Her parents, husband, three brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

Funeral services were 10 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yanton. Burial followed in the Trondhjem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Volin. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Hansen Funeral Home in Irene.

Clifford Withers

Clifford R. Withers, 79, Pierre, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre. Visitation was Thursday, March 4, from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Hofmiester Funeral Chapel in Pierre. Funeral services were Friday, March 5 at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Pierre with the Rev. David Mack officiating. Visitation in Wakonda was Saturday, March 6 from noon to 2:15 p.m. in the United Methodist Church. Burial followed at 2:30 p.m. in the Union Cemetery in Wakonda, with the Rev. Cal Petersen officiating.

Mr. Withers was born on March 11, 1919, in Wakonda to Cleon and Stella (Hood) Withers. He grew up and attended school in Wakonda, graduating from Wakonda High School.

On Sept. 20, 1940, he married Doris Fairfield in Dakota City, NE. He farmed in Wakonda before becoming employed with the Department of Agriculture, ASC office at the county, state and federal level. They moved to Pierre in 1966 and bought and operated Presto Water. Mr. Withers managed the Oahe Marina and the Fort Pierre Moose Lodge. He also worked at Hubbard Implement and Wegner Auto for a short period of time.

For many years and up until the time of his death, Mr. Withers owned and operated Cliff's Rod and Gun Shop. He was a past member of the Wakonda Odd Fellows, member of the Fort Pierre Moose Lodge and is a 40 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Centerville. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, any outdoor activity, but most of all his family.

Mr. Withers is survived by his wife Doris of Pierre; three sons: Thomas and wife Janet, Jerry and wife Margaret and Tim and wife Tammy, all of Pierre; one sister: Patricia Lewison and husband Stan of Vermillion; one granddaughter; three grandsons; one great-granddaughter; four nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter.
