Softball team to host UNC after Classic South Dakota went 1-3 in the DakotaDome Softball Classic March 21-22.
The Coyotes defeated Southwest State, 8-0, and fell to Buena Vista, 3-0, on Monday. Sunday, USD lost to North Dakota (3-0) and to Moorhead State (4-3).
The Coyotes, 13-6 overall, host Northern Colorado on Friday, March 26 in a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in the DakotaDome.
South Dakota scored 2 runs in the first inning and 6 runs in the fourth en route to the 8-0 victory over Southwest State. The Coyotes sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and pounded out 6 hits in the inning including home runs by Heather Casey and Michelle Carpenter. Casey and Maggie Gorman both went 2-for-2 to pace the Coyotes. Kris Breuer allowed 3 hits and struck out 7 in the five inning game to pick up the victory. In the second game, the Coyotes could not get the bats going and only mustered 4 hits off Buena Vista's Traci Kragel.
North Dakota took a 2-0 first inning lead over the Coyotes en route to the win. Losing pitcher Breuer gave up 8 hits with 1 walk and 7 strikeouts. USD had 7 hits led by Karla Miller, who was 2-for-3 with a single and a double. Breuer had 2 singles in three trips to the plate. In the second game, the Coyotes had a 3-0 lead before Moorhead State erupted for 4 unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth for the win. Jessica Bills paced USD's eight-hit attack going 3-for-4 with 2 singles and a home run for three RBI's. Carla Hunt was 2-for-3 with 2 singles. Andrea Bigalk took the loss despite allowing only 4 hits.
