Symphonic band members rate high at Region I Music Contest Members of the VHS Symphonic Band competed at SDHSAA Region I Instrumental Music Contest Thursday, March 18 at Vermillion High School.
The original date of March 9 was postponed due to snow. Of 49 individual events, VHS band members received 36 division I ratings, 11 Division II ratings and two Division III ratings. In percentages, the band received 74 percent Division I and 22 percent Division II ratings. The events were rated on a I to V scale where a Division I is a superior performance, Division II is an excellent performance and a Division III is a good performance.
Superior performances by an ensemble included: flute choir, flute duet, flute trio, flute quartet, clarinet choir, clarinet trio, saxophone choir, saxophone quartet, trumpet choir, trumpet duet, trumpet quartet, horn ensemble, tuba euphonium ensemble, tuba euphonium duet, brass quintet, percussion ensemble, percussion quartet, orchestra and string trio.
Excellent performance by an ensemble included: Clarinet duet, 4 Bb clarinet, saxophone trio, woodwind quintet, trumpet trio, trombone ensemble and trombone trio.
Superior performance by a soloist included: Risa Collins, flute; Kendra Korte, flute; Alison Obr, flute; Rhiannon Chandler, clarinet; Weston Olson, clarinet; Ben Williams, alto saxophone; Elizabeth Slagle, trumpet; Adam Nelson, horn; Matt Williams, trombone; Jon Rusch, euphonium; Jon Hoadley, marimba; Jon Hoadley, timpani; John Ring, violin; Jon Hoadley, video; Sara Hoadley, cello; Bridget Jacobs, cello; and Katie Jacobs, string bass.
Excellent performances by a soloist included: Nina Joy, trumpet; Mark Rusch, trombone and Todd Stephens, tuba.
