Tanagers steal 1st round win from EP-J The Vermillion Tanagers pulled away in the second half to down the Elk Point-Jefferson varsity Huskies 64-50 in boys basketball Feb. 25 at Elk Point in the first round of the District 8A Boys Basketball Tournament.

VHS had led by only six in the third period.

On Feb. 16, the Tanagers were defeated by the Huskies 73-66 in play at Vermillion. Nine days later, Vermillion was able to defeat EP-J when it really counted. VHS improved its record to 10-9, while EP-J dropped to 12-8.

Doug Hanson had 28 points (12 in the fourth quarter) and 10 rebounds.

"Everybody contributed, played together and controlled the defensive boards," said VHS Coach Troy Terronez. "This was a strong game for us over all."

The Tanagers took the lead 12-11 after the first quarter, and margins of 13-8 and 17-14 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 42-33 going into the final period.

The Tanagers committed only 4 turnovers in the victory.

"Nick Hovden and Nick Mayer did a nice job providing the leadership we needed," said Coach Terronez. "Hovden and Thompson also worked hard defensively, holding Matt Hammitt to 14 points."

In the last quarter, Hanson opened the quarter with a 3 pointer and a lay-up to set up the 14 point lead that caused EP-J to attempt seven 3-point shots which allowed Vermillion a fast break for several open 3 point and uncontested lay-ups.

In the fourth period, with EP-J fouling (to stop the clock) Vermillion was 6 for 8 from the free throw line and the last couple minutes were played by the reserves of both teams.

VHS sank 4 of 11 three-point attempts and hit 16 of 27 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 22 of 45 from the field, while EP-J was 20 of 51 from the field. EP-J connected on 1 of 11 three-point attempts and made 9 of 13 free throw tries.

VHS held a 42-26 edge on the boards.

The Tanagers had several fine individual efforts in the victory.

"Bo Nelson scored 12 points (7 in the third quarter) and 5 rebounds, and also had a blocked shot," Coach Terronez said. "Beau Blouin went 7 for 10 from the charity stripe, and contributed 10 rebounds and 2 assists."
