Theatre workshops planned at Vermillion Middle School Commedia Theatre Company will conduct workshops for local sixth-grade students as part of the South Dakota Arts Council's Artists-In-Schools program. The group will work with the sixth-graders during their residency in the Vermillion Middle School from March 15-19.
The professionals of the Commedia Theatre Company contribute to the development of children by exposing them to the creative experience of theater. When children are encouraged to create and perform, their self-esteem is boosted, and a life-long interest in the arts is nurtured. By participating in the process of creativity, young people are challenged to "think in a different way," an approach that can be applied to their other studies as well.
The Commedia Theatre Company residency will encourage students to explore their creativity through story and play creation as well as creative dramatics exercises which will culminate in a final performance at the sixth annual Sixth-Grade Renaissance Fair, which will be held at the Vermillion Middle School on Thursday, March 18, from 7 – 9 p.m.
This program is sponsored by the ABC Grant program through the local school district and fundraising conducted by the sixth-grade students themselves. The South Dakota Arts Council also provides support with funds from the State of South Dakota and the National Endowment for the Arts.
