Vermillion falls to Dakota Valley The Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Dakota Valley High School varsity Panthers 67-46 in boys basketball Feb. 27 at Yankton in the semi-finals of the District 8A Boys Basketball Tournament.

This was the Tanagers' final basketball game of the year. VHS saw its record fall to 10-10, while Dakota Valley upped its mark to 13-8.

Nick Mayer picked up his scoring and chipped in 12 points.

The Tanagers jumped ahead 12-11 after the first quarter, trailed 30-22 at halftime, and then trailed 50-35 after the third quarter.

VHS hit 6 of 23 three-point tries and hit 8 of 17 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 16 of 43 field goals, while Dakota Valley was 22 of 37 from the field. Dakota Valley hit 3 of 7 three-point tries and connected on 20 of 30 free throw tries.

Although defeated, the Tanagers had some individual bright spots.

"Bo Nelson and Jordan Thompson played tough defense and were scrambling all over the floor," said VHS Coach Troy Terronez. "That is how defense should be played."
