Coyote baseball team sweeps Morningside South Dakota improved its record to 16-10 overall and 3-1 in the North Central Conference with a doubleheader home sweep over Morningside last Friday in Vermillion by the scores of 6-0 and 5-2. Morningside fell to 12-13 overall and 1-3 in the NCC. The Coyotes, who played at South Dakota State April 7, host North Dakota State and North Dakota April 9-10.
In the first game against Morningside USD pitcher Jeff LeMaster went the distance with a two-hit shutout with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. After three scoreless innings, the Coyotes scored twice in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single by Mitch Stewart driving in Jim McNaughton and Phil Gonyer after they reached with a single and a double, respectively. USD added 4 more runs in the fifth sparked by a two-run single by Tucker McGinnis.
In the second game the Coyotes jumped to a 3-0 lead after two innings. In the first frame USD's Jim McNaughton belted a solo home run and in the second inning McGinnis drove in a run with a single. Morningside scored its first run of the twinbill when Nic Nelson connected for a home run in the top of the fifth. USD, however, answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Don Busi and Shane Summers. Winning pitcher Ryan Goodwin fanned 8 and walked 5. Julio Jimenez came on in the fifth and recorded the save. Busi led the Coyotes going 3-for-3 with 2 singles and a double and Dustin Moore had 2 singles.
