Hartig named USD Employee of the Month

Hartig named USD Employee of the Month An upbeat attitude and strong interpersonal skills have earned Loraine Hartig of Sioux Falls the April Career Service Employee of the Month Award at The University of South Dakota.

Hartig, administrative assistant for the USD Department of Family Medicine since November, 1996, was honored during a ceremony at the Health Science Center in Sioux Falls. USD President James W. Abbott presented Hartig with a plaque and a check.

"I definitely enjoy the employees that I work with and the work itself is enjoyable," Hartig said. "This position was my first opportunity to start at ground zero to develop the organization of the department. It gave me the opportunity to concentrate on the accounting and office procedures for one clinical department."

USD Department of Family Medicine Professor and Chair H. Bruce Vogt nominated Hartig based on her organizational skills, efficiency, warm personality, and knowledge of statewide policies and procedures. "The administrative assistant position was new to our department when Loraine took the job. Therefore, there was a great deal to do to organize the office and get it running smoothly. Her task was made more difficult by the fact that our department is rather complex. Hiring Loraine was about the first major decision I made as a department chair and still to this point, one of my best decisions."

According to Vogt, Hartig's knowledge of statewide policies and procedures is especially helpful. "I was a relatively new department chair and still learning my job. I was not well versed in university and state policies. It was on-the-job training for both of us and Loraine immediately took charge. The fact that she'd been in the Grants and Finance office for eight and a half years prior to this was one of the things I found tremendously beneficial. I was very pleased when she applied, as well as relieved. I knew she'd keep me on the ball."

Hartig, originally of Beatrice, NE, began working at the USD School of Medicine in 1988. She and her husband, Jeff, live in Sioux Falls with their son, Nick and daughter, Kristin.
