New cable service one step closer here by David Lias As early as this fall, the citizens of Vermillion may have an opportunity to tune their televisions into the offerings of a new cable television franchise in the city.
The Vermillion City Council approved a 15-year nonexclusive cable television franchise agreement with Dakota Telecom Group (DTG) of Irene at its meeting Monday.
That means DTG, by late summer or early fall, could begin offering cable television services to certain areas of the city as work progresses.
The franchise of Vermillion Cable Television, the citys present cable TV provider, is due to expire in October. Vermillion Cable has chosen not to take part in negotiations that the city held in the past several months to hammer out DTGs 60-page agreement.
Monday nights action wasnt the result of an easy process. Bill Heeston of DTG addressed the council before it put the cable TV ordinance on its second reading. He noted several sticking points in the lengthy document.
Discussions about those aspects of the franchise lasted for over an hour. The city council agreed to amend some aspects of the franchise agreement to be more to DTGs liking. Several areas that Heeston was hoping to change, however, were left untouched.
