Pride of Vermillion bands rate superior at contests Vermillion High School's bands have been very busy the last month at jazz band and large group competitions.

At both the Coyote Jazz Festival on March 16 and the Northeast Jazz Festival on March 30, VHS Jazz-One received Division I ratings. Patrick Ireland and Jon Hoadley were awarded Outstanding Soloist awards at the Coyote Festival and Patrick Ireland also received an Outstanding Soloist award at the Northeast festival. VHS Jazz-One performed Sugar Buzz by Denis DiBlasio, Take Me with You, by Russ Freeman, and Summer Samba, by Mark Taylor.

The VHS Symphonic Band was awarded its eighth straight Division I rating at the SDHSAA Region I Large Group Contest held in Freeman on April 7.

Each of the three judges, Alan LaFave, Myren Schoop and Lonn Sweet, were in charge of seven captions on their ballot. Of the 21 captions, the band received 20 Division I's and one Division II.

The Symphonic Band performed Century Point by Robert Sheldon and Invercargill by Alex Lithgow, arranged by Andy Glover.
