Rawlins Piano Trio will present season’s finale

Rawlins Piano Trio will present season's finale The nationally-acclaimed Rawlins Piano Trio of The University of South Dakota will present the fourth and final concert of its 1998-99 concert season titled, A Musical Tour.

The series, being performed both in Vermillion and in Sioux Falls, features music by composers from around the world, including the Trio's American music specialty. Concerts III and IV are performed in conjunction with America and the Jewish World sponsored by The University of South Dakota College of Fine Arts during spring semester 1999. The works highlighted are by composers either of Jewish ancestry or those who wrote music based on Jewish ideas.

Concert IV will feature the dramatic and moving Trio in E minor by Russian composer Demitri Shostakovich. This work was written in 1944, during WWII, and contains a Jewish dance tune in its final movement in an expression of sympathy and disgust for the horrors committed against Jews during this time. Opening the concert is the lush and romantic Trio by American Henry Holden Huss, a work which will soon be recorded by the Trio for a third compact disc. This work was written in 1886, was never published, and apparently received all of its performance with the composer as pianist. This performance by the Rawlins Piano Trio is the rediscovery of an important work in the history of American music.

This final Sioux Falls concert of the season is on Tuesday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. The Vermillion concert is Sunday, April 25 at 3 p.m. in Farber Hall. For the Sioux Falls series, admissions for each concert is $7 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students/children. Tickets are sold at the door. In Vermillion, the series is underwritten by The University of South Dakota College of Fine Arts and there is no admission charge. The concert series is co-sponsored by the USD Medical School and the College of Fine Arts.

The trio enjoys a reputation as a preeminent interpreter of American music, and has recorded two CDs of music by American composers on the Albany Records label. The second disc was released in January 1999 and is nationally available. A third disc will be recorded in June of 1999. Members of the Rawlins Piano Trio are pianist Susan Keith Gray, violinist John Thomson, and cellist Richard Rognstad. The artists fulfill teaching positions in the music department of The University of South Dakota.
