SAE will sponsor Swing into Summer by David Lias Young and old dust off your dance shoes!
Sigma Alpha Epsilon is sponsoring an alcohol-free party titled Swing into Summer on Saturday, April 24, in the DakotaDome parking lot.
In case of rain, the event will be held in the commons.
Activities begin with a benefit barbecue pork feed from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from the meal will be donated to G.A.M.M.A. (Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol).
From 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., swing dance lessons will be given to people attending the event by Judi OConnell from the Dance Studio.
A swing dance, featuring The University of South Dakota Jazz Ensembles, will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight.
An hour-long swing dance competition will be held beginning at 10 p.m.
This event is being planned by Sigma Alpha Epsilon because swing music has become trans-generational and can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
SAE is also hosting Swing into Summer to help increase alcohol awareness in the community, foster positive relations between USD and the city of Vermillion, help teach the community the dangers and effects associated with the misuse of alcohol, and provide a fun, safe alternative to using alcohol.
And, theres an extra bonus, according to the planners of the event.
Swing into Summer will be a great opportunity, they said, to display some of the universitys finest qualities, including the universitys jazz band.
