Swopes basketball team earns third The Vermillion Swopes sixth-grade girls basketball team earned third place at the LeMars Girls tournament.
A slow offensive showing had the Swopes falling behind the LeMars Sparks 6-15 at the end of three quarters. Aggressive defense and a hot shooting hand resulted in a 17-point fourth quarter scoring effort. A final score of 23-20 moved the Swopes into the semi-final action.
Saturday morning action found the Swopes falling behind early and relinquishing victory to a strong Akron/Westfield team.
Playing Woodbury Central for third place honors, the Swopes jumped out to an 18-7 half-time lead. A tenacious full-court press allowed the Wildcats to take the lead early in the fourth quarter. An 11-point swing and stingy defense in the final 5 minutes of the game sealed a 32-26 victory for the Swopes.

The sixth-grade girls thank their coaches, Deb Thomas, Roxanne Olson and Lars Aga for their time this season. The Swopes placed in every tournament they entered, earning two second places and three third places to compile a 13-8 record.
