The Bluffs is listed fourth best course by Jim Prosser The publication Golf Digest has reported its 1999-2000 evaluations of the 100 greatest golf courses in America. While Vermillion�s golf course is not among the top 100, it is ranked as the fourth best golf course in South Dakota.
The Bluffs is in its third full year of operation and the recognition accorded to the course is indicative of the continuing development and improvements made by the superintendent and staff.
The community of Vermillion can look with pride on another recognition of the foresight shown in undertaking the program involving the concept of The Bluffs.
The criteria for rating a golf course by Golf Digest as listed in the article are: 1. Shot values, 2. Resistance to scoring, 3. Design variety, 4. Memorability, 5. Esthetics, 6. Conditioning, 7. Tradition (bonus) and 8. Walking (bonus). Accessibility to the public is also given consideration.
The question �Who rates the courses?� was answered in the article by indicating that the rating is done by a panel of evaluators numbering 660 men and women with a keen interest in course architecture. They can be golf professionals, low handicap amateurs, seniors, ladies and even professional caddies.
The number one rated course in South Dakota is Dakota Dunes Country Club, North Sioux City. There are 118
golf courses in South Dakota and over 16,000 in the United States.
