USD baseball team sweeps Northern State South Dakota improved its baseball record to 13-9 with a doubleheader sweep over Northern State March 29 in Vermillion by the scores of 7-2 and 5-3.
In the first game the Coyotes jumped to a 7-1 lead after two innings en route to the win. USD banged out 12 hits led by Mitch Stewart, who was 2-for-2 with a single and a double. Phil Gonyer also had two hits and he drove in two runs.
The second game went nine innings with the Coyotes scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth. USD tied the score in the sixth inning at 3-3 on a solo home run by Stewart. In the bottom of the ninth, Jeff Snell gave the Coyotes the win with a two-run home run.
South Dakota, which split with Dordt March 27 with a 9-5 win in the first game and a 13-12 loss in the second game, posted a doubleheader sweep over Concordia (Seward, NE) March 24 in Vermillion by the scores of 8-3 and 10-0.
In the first game Tucker McGinnis connected for a grand slam home run in the bottom of the second to cap a six-run inning. The Coyotes, who added single runs in the third and sixth innings, were also led by Snell, who was 2-for-2 with a single and a double.
Winning pitcher Matt McDermott, who was backed by a 10-hit attack, notched his fourth straight win in improving his record to 4-1.
In the second game the Coyotes jumped to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the first inning. USD had eight hits led by Mitch Stewart, who went 2-for-2 with a single and a double. Jim McNaughton drove in two runs with a double. Kent Jansen walked three times and scored twice.
