Youth choir to perform April 10-11 The Rochester Covenant Church Youth Choir of Rochester, MN will perform in Vermillion April 10 and 11 under the direction of Vermillion native Jon Coker.
The group will be featured Sunday, April 11, in the 10:30 a.m. worship service at the United Church of Christ, Congregational. The choir will also present a full-length concert Saturday evening, April 10, at Hillside Community Church. That performance begins at 7:30 p.m.
The Youth Choir, which Coker has directed since the fall of 1991, is made up of singers from seventh grade through high school. Approximately 35 choir members expect to participate in this spring's tour. The ensemble previously performed in Vermillion in 1994.
A 1979 graduate of Vermillion High School, Coker participated in band, chorus and the Opus 79 swing choir. He also sang bass in the Quartertones, a quartet whose members, including Rolf Olson, Gregory Helseth and Charles B. Roegiers, still relish the occasional opportunity to make music together.
Coker has sung in the Wheaton College (IL) Concert Choir and the Robert Bergland Chorale in Minneapolis. He is currently active in the Rochester Choral Arts Ensemble and its semi-professional subgroups, which include the Chamber Singers, Men's Capella, and Jazz Sextet, as singer and bass/baritone soloist. He is employed as an electrical engineer at IBM's Rochester facility.
Kay Coker, Jon's wife, is piano accompanist as well as tour manager for the Youth Choir. She is the daughter of Verlyn and Gertrude Lapour of Alcester. The Cokers' three pre-teen children will accompany their parents on the tour.
The young people of the Youth Choir enjoy sharing their music as a means of ministry and service to others. Their varied repertoire includes contemporary jazz pieces, standard a capella works, short skits, traditional hymn arrangements and ancient chants.
The public is cordially invited to attend any of the choir performances, which include a 7 p.m. concert on Friday, April 9, at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester. The group is also scheduled to sing in the dining room of the Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, April 10.
