Dakota Dunes Open purse could increase The Nike Dakota Dunes Open has always had one of the largest purses on the Nike Tour. This year's purse of $350,000 could grow substantially for next year's tournament with a new PGA Tour subsidy under consideration.
Pending final PGA TourTournament Policy Board approval, the tour will provide substantial additional underpinning to all Nike Tour purses beginning with the 2000 season.
Minimum purses on the Nike Tour, currently $225,000, were projected to grow to $250,000 for next year. A new PGA Tour subsidy, however, will increase that minimum to $350,000 per event, a 55 percent increase over this year.
"The PGA Tour sees enormous value in elevating the stature of the Nike Tour," said PGA Tour Commissioner Timothy W. Finchem. "We are committed to building this property into an even stronger tour in future years and are very excited about offering increased purses for our competitors."
Nike Dakota Dunes Open Tournament Director J.R. Castner sees the new subsidy as a positive sign from the PGA Tour.
"We're pleased to hear that purses across the board on the Nike Tour will be going up," said Castner.
The 1999 Nike Tour is playing for a record $7.63 million in prize money, but the real prize on the Nike Tour is gaining PGA Tour playing privileges. The top 15 finishers on the year-long money list automatically qualify for the PGA Tour in 2000 with the next ten players gaining automatic entry to the final round of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament.
This year's Nike Dakota Dunes Open takes place July 25 through August 1 at the Dakota Dunes Country Club, Dakota Dunes. First round tournament play begins at 7 a.m. on Thursday, July 29 with the final round on Sunday, Aug. 1.
