Joe Grause is new Vermillion alderman

Joe Grause is new Vermillion alderman by David Lias Joe Grause is the newest member of the Vermillion City Council.

He and incumbent aldermen Kevin Annis, Leo Powell and Frank Slagle were sworn in for another term on the city council Monday.

None of the men faced an election challenge. Grause replaces LeRoy Backhaus, who chose not seek re-election to the council when his term expired this year.

Backhaus served as alderman of the city�s northwest ward beginning in May 1993.

In other action, the council set June 2 as the date for bid opening for lime sludge disposal improvements.

The proposed project involves construction of soil cement-lined sludge drying lagoons for the disposal of the lime sludge from the city�s water treatment operation.

Estimated project costs are $942,000. The cost of the project will be paid for with an increase in water revenues.

The city�s current water rates are $12.08 per month for 5,000 gallons and the city is proposing to raise rates to $15.15 per month for 5,000 gallons.

The city recently conducted an archeological survey at the proposed project location. Preliminary reports indicate that the project will not affect any historical resources.
