Memorial Day services set May 31 in Vermillion Vermillion will honor its war dead with special Memorial Day services on Monday, May 31 at 10 a.m. in the National Guard Armory.
Leo Powell, commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, will give the introduction. Korry Speakman of Boy Scout Troop #66 will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. The invocation will be given by the Rev. Sandy Aakre.
General John Logan's Orders will be read by Mike Hauck and the guest speaker is Vermillion Mayor Bill Radigan. Leonard Bottolfson, VFW quartermaster/adjutant, will give the honor roll call.
Wreaths will be placed by Jerry Anderson, American Legion commander, Jean Nissen, American Legion Auxiliary president Harriet Randall, VFW Auxiliary president, and Powell.
Mara Schwartz will sing The Star Spangled Banner, followed by the benediction given by the Rev. Aakre.
The VFW firing squad, Leroy Backhaus, Steve Kronaizl, James Kronaizl, Jeff Styles, Joe Conroy, Gus Amundson and Leonard Bottolfson, will present the salute to honor the dead, followed by Taps by Scott Muntfering.
"This is a special day to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom," Powell said. "The public is invited to share in these special services that pay tribute to them."
