Austrid D. Smith, 86, of Vermillion, died Thursday, May 20, 1999 at the Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center.
Austrid Anderson was born on April 5, 1913 in rural Clay County to Jay and Selma (Hoyer) Anderson. She graduated from Vermillion High School in 1930, and received a BA Degree from USD in 1935. She married Lester Smith on June 1, 1941 in Clinton, IA. He died in 1996. She had taught in rural schools in the Clay County area from 1935 to 1969. She later taught third grade at St. Agnes Catholic School in Vermillion from 1969-1974, when she then retired. After retirement, she worked in the dietary department at the Dakota Hospital in Vermillion until 1983.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and the Sunshine Church Circle; She was active with the Civic Council, and a past member of the Dakota Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a lifetime member of the South Dakota retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by her son, Loren, and wife, Janell, of Rochester, MN; two brothers: Clifton Anderson of Atlanta, GA, and Sidney Anderson of Rockford, IL. She is also survived by three sisters: Aldna Ufford of Pine Island, MN, Irene Burton of Vermillion and Olivia Peak of Uba, CA. Two step-grandchildren also survive her.
Memorial services were held on Monday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Vermillion. Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion was in charge of arrangements.
Berna Olson Malmin, 92, Vermillion, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital.
Funeral services were held May 25, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion, with the Rev. Kevin Clark officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls.
Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion, was in charge of arrangements.
She was born Jan. 24, 1907, on a farm near Inwood, IA, to Lewis and Bertha (Hillesland) Holland. She attended schools in Inwood, graduating from Inwood High School. She graduated from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, in 1929.
After college, she taught high school English at Harrisburg for two years. In December 1930, she married Clifford J. Olson, a professor of music at Augustana. He died in January 1982. She married Gunnar Malmin in 1987. The couple moved to Northwood Assisted Living Center, Vermillion, in August of 1994.
She was an active member of First Lutheran, Sioux Falls, and she recently became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion.
She is survived by her husband: Gunnar, Vermillion; one son: David and wife Janice Olson, Vermillion; three grandchildren: Rolf and wife Marcia Olson, Beresford, Sonja Waltner and husband Don, Freeman, and Karin Farrell and husband Kevin, New York, NY; three great-grandchildren; one brother: Lewis Holland and wife Edna, Scottsdale, AZ; three stepsons: David Ross, Westfir, OR, Olaf Malmin, Minneapolis, MN, Jon Malmin, Gig Harbor, WA; and one stepdaughter: Anne Berg, Davis, CA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, two brothers, Don and LeRoy, and one sister, Lenore Roraus.
Dolores Kephart, 79, of Pierre, died Thursday, May 20, 1999 at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre. Funeral services were Saturday, May 22 at 10 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Pierre with The Rev. Genie Butler officiating.
Visitation was Friday, May 21 from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Hofmeister Funeral Home in Pierre. Burial was in BluffView Cemetery, Vermillion.
Dolores Kephart was born May 23, 1919 in Long Pine, NE, the daughter of Goldie Henry. She grew up and attended school in Omaha, NE. On March 6, 1937, she married John D. Kephart in Council Bluffs, IA. The couple moved to Pierre in 1960 where Dolores was employed as a grocery clerk. She was an active member of the Senior Center in Pierre.
Dolores is survived by two daughters: Joan D. (Kephart) Hancock and her husband Richard, of Pierre, and Patricia J. (Kephart) Goldammer, of Rapid City; five grandchildren and special friends: Dick and Joyce Richardson and family and Howard and Carolyn Krueger.
She was preceded in death by her mother, her husband, John D., two brothers: Robert Zachary and Cecil Zachary and one son, John Dale Kephart Jr. Memorials may be directed to the Pierre Senior Center.
Loren D. Rudd II
Loren Dale Rudd II, 37, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999 at his home in Sierra Vista, AZ.
He was born Sept. 26, 1961 in Orange, CA to Loren and Beverly Gail Rudd.
His family will remember him as a loving husband, father and brother. He was a strong, giving and honest man, who loved everyone and always gave a hand to anyone in need of help. He loved fishing, gardening and restoring cars.
Loren was preceded in death by his brother Gary Lee Rudd.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years: Marie of Sierra Vista, AZ; son: Joseph Loren Rudd of Sierra Vista, AZ; daughter: Rachel Morain (Ken) of Sierra Vista, AZ; parents: Loren Dale Rudd of Benson, AZ, and Beverly Elder of St. David, AZ; sister: Sandra Gall (Greg) of South Dakota; sister-in-law: Joanne Newton (Steve) of Gallup, NM; brothers: Thomas Rudd and Chris Rudd of Benson, AZ; brothers-in-law: John D'auria (Mary) of Sierra Vista, AZ, and August Raymond D'auria (Pam) of Gallup, NM; one grandchild: Kenneth Wayne Morain II; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held May 21, at the Revivaltime Christian Church, Sierra Vista, AZ, with pastor W.R. Gordon officiating.
