Sports Fest helps teach lessons for outdoor fun

Sports Fest helps teach lessons for outdoor fun by M. Jill Sundstrom Sports Fest will offer a variety of outdoor activities for youth age 8 to 18 June 12 at the Clay County Park Sportsmens Club.

Participants are urged to pre-register by June 7 at the Clay County Extension office at 515 High Street.

Sponsored by the Clay County 4-H Shooting Sports Club under the auspices of the National Rifle Association with major funding from the NRA Foundation and the South Dakota 4-H Foundation, the Sports Fest is designed to teach kids both skills and safety as they venture outdoors.

Activities will include rifle marksmanship, trap shooting, archery, boating safety, firearm safety and muzzle loader demonstrations. Other activities are tentatively scheduled, such as gun dog training, a falconry demonstration and first aid.

This will be the third Sports Fest, according to Bruce Plate, one of the Clay County 4-H Shooting Sports Club leaders. Up to 80 youngsters have participated each year.

The purpose of the Sports Fest is to bring kids together for outdoor experiences in a supervised, structured and safe environment, Plate said. Each station will have a certified, trained individual who will show the kids the dos and donts of their subject. Its a great way for kids to learn and have fun, too.

Plate added that adults are welcome to volunteer to help during Sports Fest. They can call him at 624-8418 to sign up.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Participants need not be 4-H members and there is no charge for the day-long event. Lunch and beverages will be provided. Kids are encouraged to bring their friends or even relatives who may be visiting at the time.

Anyone is welcome, Plate said. In the past weve had kids come from around the region and from as far away as Kansas, Minnesota and even Kentucky.
