Vermillion receives loan to upgrade water treatment

Vermillion receives loan to upgrade water treatment The South Dakota Board of Water and Natural Resources approved six grants and loans totaling nearly $2.6 million when the board met May 13 over the state Rural Development Telecommunications Network.

The $2.6 million total includes two State Water Resource Management System grants totaling $1.1 million, a Clean Water State Revolving Fund loan for $509,935, a Drinking Water State Revolving Fund loan for $942,000, and two Solid Waste Management Program grants totaling $18,700.

Gov. Bill Janklow recommended the funding. "These types of projects are essential to making water and wastewater improvements, and are instrumental in cleaning up waste tire piles. Projects such as these ultimately improve the water quality and promote economic development in their respective areas," he said.

The State Water Resource Management System grants include $300,000 to the Sioux Falls Flood Control Project for completion of final plans and specifications and an $800,0000 grant to the Fall River Rural Water System Project for first-year construction.

The Drinking Water State Revolving Fund loan is for $942,000 at 5 percent for 20 years to Vermillion for upgrades to the city's water treatment facility.

The Solid Waste Management Program grants include a $2,300 grant to Bison and a $16,400 grant to Winner. Both grants are for waste tire removal projects and are grant increases to previous grants awarded to the communities. Bison had previously received $500, and the community's $2,800 grant total will be used to remove 2,500 tires. Winner had previously received $6,100, and the community's $22,500 grant total will be used to remove 25,000 tires.
