VMS track teams participate in Yankton invitational meet by Jim Prosser The 49th Annual Yankton Junior High Relays were held Thursday, May 13 at the Yankton School Track.
Fifteen junior high and middle schools participated in seventh- and eighth-grade combined divisions involving separate competition for girls and boys. Schools represented at the meet included Brandon Valley, Canton, Crofton, NE, Freeman, Irene, Freeman Academy, Gayville-Volin, Hanson County, Marion, Mitchell, South Sioux City, NE, Menno, Vermillion, Wakonda and host Yankton.
There was also a ninth-grade division for boys and girls, but Vermillion's ninth-grade did not enter.
The meet included four individual races, four relays and four field events.
VMS boys scored three firsts: 110 M. hurdles, Michael Buckanaga (17.04); 4 x 400 M Relay (Matt Varnes, Buckanaga, Jeff Brevik, Bart Miller) (4:01) and Medley relay (Varnes, Buckanaga, Jared Burcham, Brevik) (1:49.5 � a school record).
In the high jump, Varnes was second with a 5-6, another school record. Tyler Brown placed eighth.
In the long jump Buckanaga was third. Brevik placed eighth.
In the 4 x 200 relay fifth place went to Burcham, Mike Clark, Trevor Garrett and Kellen Cusick.

1600 M run � fourth John Brooks.
Discus � sixth Dru Vankley.
100 M. dash � third Jenna Gilkyson.
800 M. run � seventh Dani Weydert.
1600 M. run � fourth Meghan Griffith; fifth Morgan Hollingsworth.
4 x 100 M. � fifth (Carly Bernard, J. Gilkyson, Molly Beeman, Kaylie Heesch).
4 x 200 M. � fourth ( J. Gilkyson, Bernard, Beeman, Brittany Sand).
4 x 400 M. � eighth (Hollingsworth, Nicki Mollet, Weydert, Brittany Gilkyson).
Considering the number of schools and level of competition, coaches Culver, Heirigs, and Jerred were quite pleased with the team's performance.
