Delta Kappa Gamma meets in Brookings The Alpha Pi State of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International held its state convention June 11 and 12 at the Holiday Inn, Brookings. Darlene Telkamp, Spearfish, presided at the business meetings. "Accepting the Challenge of Change" was the theme for the convention.
Brenda Martens, Vermillion, was elected state president; Rosella Beaumont, Rapid City, first vice state president; Liz Wood, Sioux Falls, second vice state president; Diane Thaler, Wagner, recording secretary and Janet Hoff, Vermillion, corresponding secretary. Appointments were Janet Shelver, Sioux Falls, treasurer and Darlene Telkamp, parliamentarian.
Workshops were conducted Friday afternoon with Brenda Martens leading the vice presidents and Mary Geffre Johnson presenting the historian and yearbook workshop. Other workshops conducted were leadership development, technology, tips for travelers, preview of Delta Kappa Gamma Tours and making gift boxes and bags from recyclables.
The "Hour of Remembrance" was held on Saturday morning with Martens presiding at the ceremony. The birthday luncheon was the celebration of the 59th anniversary of Alpha Pi State.
Alpha Pi State Achievement award winners were Shirley Pullman, Aberdeen and Ruth Anderson, Brookings.
The tribute to the founders was under the direction of Johnson, with past state presidents and state officers assisting. Awards won by Eta chapter were world fellowship, legislative and chapter scrapbook.
The president's banquet was held with installation of officers and the president's march featuring chapter presidents.
Jackylnn Cuppy, international representative, was the main speaker with her message "Working Together … The Power to Change Lives." Alpha Pi State Chorus, under the direction of Lynette Olson, provided the entertainment for the evening.
The State Project "Assisting, Educating and Entertaining the Elderly" was approved by the members.
Attending the convention from Vermillion were Linda Wymer, Eta president, Hoff, Gerri Van Bruggen, Margaret Miller, Maurine Richardson, Edith Heer, Mary Geffre Johnson and Martens.
Eta chapter will host the 2000 convention to be held in Vermillion, on the campus of The University of South Dakota, June 9 and 10, 2000.
