Funding awarded to Upward Bound

Funding awarded to Upward Bound The University of South Dakota will receive $229,451 to support programs aimed at ensuring students with specific needs have the academic skills and motivation to succeed in college.

The announcement was made by Senators Tim Johnson and Tom Daschle.

The senators said this funding is part of the U.S. Department of Education's Upward Bound program which helps low income students, first generation military veterans and students from families where neither parent holds a bachelor's degree complete high school and prepare for college.

"The Upward Bound program at USD will benefit from this additional funding," Johnson said. "These programs provide students with limited means an opportunity to learn the necessary skills in order to succeed in a college or university setting. Education is the cornerstone of South Dakota's future, and I urge continued support from local, state and national levels."

"Education is an important key to success," Daschle said.
