Housing program funds awarded to Vermillion and other cities Gov. Bill Janklow said May 28 that steps are under way to help more South Dakota citizens find affordable housing in the Black Hills, Sioux Falls, Watertown, Lennox and Vermillion. The programs also will help deal with housing shortages facing the Yankton Sioux, Rosebud Sioux and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes.

Janklow said the South Dakota Housing Development Authority awarded $2,397,066 in federal Housing Tax Credit and HOME Investment Partnership Program funding to assist in financing over $17 million in the development and rehabilitation of affordable housing.

In making the announcement, Janklow said, "These funds will help the communities and developers offer rental housing and homeownership at rates of $100 to $200 per month below the market.

"We're working very hard to make sure well-maintained and well-managed rental housing is preserved at affordable rents. This is a great example of leveraging affordable housing funds with lender financing and private investment to provide more affordable places to live," Janklow said.

The following developments were awarded funding:

Butte, Lawrence and Meade counties � Neighborhood Housing Services of the Black Hills, Inc.: $255,900 HOME loan will assist in the acquisition and rehabilitation of four existing single-family homes for low-

income families.

Central City � Neighborhood Housing Services of the Black Hills, Inc.: $55,000 HOME loan for the construction of a single-family home for a low-income family.

Custer � Development for the Disabled, Inc.: $493,440 HOME loan for 10 rental units for elderly and persons with disabilities. The Governor's Inmate-Built Housing will be used for this project.

Eagle Butte � Oti Kaga, Inc.: $85,703 in Housing Tax Credits for 20 Governor's Inmate-Built Housing units.

Lennox � FMLB Limited Partnership: $150,000 HOME loan for the purchase and rehabilitation of Greenbriar Apartments, an elderly apartment complex.

Rapid City � Opportunity Builders: $250,000 in Housing Tax Credits for a newly constructed 61-unit apartment complex, Rolling Hills, to be rented to low income families.

Rapid City � Rapid City Housing Coalition: $323,570 HOME loan for the development of five single family homes for low-income families.

Rosebud Housing Authority: $119,106 in Housing Tax Credits for the rehabilitation of 76 single family homes at Antelope, He Dog, Rosebud, Grass Mountain, Parmalee, St. Francis, and Two Strike.

Sioux Falls � Senior Housing Services, Inc.: $166,857 in Housing Tax Credits for a new 45-unit elderly apartment complex adjacent to the Bergland Center for Active Generations.

Sioux Falls � St. Joseph Catholic Housing: $251,276 in Housing Tax Credits for the acquisition and rehabilitation of Heritage Apartments, a 96-unit elderly complex and Rolling Hills, a 48-unit family complex.

Vermillion � Costello Company: $39,129 in Housing Tax Credits for a new 24-unit family apartment complex, Parkwood Apartments.

Wagner � Yankton Sioux Housing Authority: $165,085 in Housing Tax Credits for the construction of 10 single family homes and the rehabilitation of 20 single family homes in Wagner. Governor's Inmate-Built Housing units will be used in this project.

Watertown � Habitat for Humanity: $42,000 HOME loan to develop 2 single family homes for low-income families.
