Vermillion Boys U10 soccer team plays in tourney quarter finals The Vermillion Boys U10 soccer team traveled to Rapid City with a contingent of parents to participate in the State Soccer Tournament June 4 and 5. In their first game, the boys met a team from Sturgis at 7 a.m. Friday and came away with a hard fought 3-1 victory. Casey Carlson led off the scoring with Jeff Donnelly and Zach Johnson each adding a goal. Donnelly also collected five saves in the soalie postiion with Zachery Bergman and Johnson contributing two saves each.
The boys added another win that afternoon by defeating a team from Lead-Deadwood by the score of 9-0. After Carlson again led off the scoring, Ryan Powell added three goals with Donnelly and Johnson adding two goals each. Justice Meyer rounded out the scoring with a goal of his own.
Powell and Donnelly provided the highlight of the game by taking a play out of Vermillion HS Coach Scott Brink's play book with Donnelly heading in a goal from Powell's corner kick. Johnson led the team in saves with two and Donnelly tacked on one save.
The third game of pool play had the boys facing a team from Sioux Falls in order to advance in the tournament. Vermillion came away with a 3-0 shutout victory in another early morning game. Johnson led off the scoring with Powell and Donnelly each adding a goal. Johnson also had three saves with Donnelly adding two.
The boys took first place in their pool of four teams, which earned them a place in the quarter finals on Saturday afternoon. In that game, the boys faced a seasoned Aberdeen team which had only allowed one goal against them in their previous three games.
Johnson led off the scoring with Donnelly adding two goals in the second half of play. The goalies were kept busy this game with Donnelly recording four saves and Johnson adding two.
The boys played very hard but ended their season with 6-3 loss to a team that ended up in second place at the state tournament. The team would like to thank all of the parents that supported their trip to Rapid City and also to Artz Photography for their support in sending Vermillion teams to the state tournament.
Special thanks go to Coach Scott Brink for providing some game fundamentals and new practice drills. The Vermillion Blue Devils finished their fall and spring season with 13 wins, one loss and two ties.
