Vermillion's Post #1 team posts 1-3 record in Mitchell Vermillion's Legion Post #1 baseball team was entered in the Mitchell Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, June 5-6.
The purpose of this early tourney was to give the participants a chance to gain experience playing teams from remote areas. It was a no-trophy tourney but a most valuable player was chosen for each game.
Post #1 faced four teams: Rapid City #320, Brookings, Chamberlain and Sioux Falls West. They compiled a 1-3 record, losing to RC #320 (13-4), Brookings (15-13) and Sioux Falls West (13-4) and defeating Chamberlain (12-4).
As a learning proposal, Vermillion's pitchers had trouble finding the strike zone early. Otherwise there were lots of positives according to Coach Devin Schwiesow.
Dustin Larson had a great tourney at the plate going 7 for 13, scoring six runs while driving in four. Tim Broderson improved his record to 2-0 with the win against Chamberlain, and Tom Dorsey was MVP in that game.
"With a season record of 3-7, we have a long way to go before reaching the team's full potential in the game of baseball," Schwiesow said.
Vermillion played a double header in Elk Point on June 8, followed by another double header at home June 10 against Beresford.
Post #1 will be at Sioux Falls for the Post #15 eight-team Tournament June 11-13.
