Clubs Catholic Daughters
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Agnes 687 in Vermillion and Court St. Theresa of Avila 2325 in Beresford shared a candlelight ceremony to install new Court officers on June 22 at The House of Mary Shrine in Yankton.
Newly installed officers from the Vermillion Court are: Mary Bartels, regent; Leota Conroy, vice regent; Theresa Wingen, recording secretary; Maria Heimstra, financial secretary, and Rosalie Hubert, treasurer.
Following the installation ceremony, the membership prayed the rosary around the Sacred Heart of Jesus Fountain, toured the beautiful grounds at the shrine and viewed the future location of a stained glass window currently being crafted using funds raised as a Catholic Daughters of the Americas state project.
The evening was concluded with a fine meal at Mom's Picnic Place, and many thanks are due Mary Geffre Johnson for her hard work in organizing this bus trip that included members from Beresford, Elk Point and Vermillion.
The Court is adjourned until the fall meeting in September.
Vermillion Rotary Club
Vermillion dentist Dr. Randy Houska presided Tuesday in his first meeting as Rotary Club president for the 1999-2000 year.
Other new officers for the 55-member group are Dean Clark, vice president; Kathy Chandler, secretary; Dan Van Peursem, treasurer and Byron Bymers, sergeant-at-arms.
In lieu of a guest speaker following lunch this week, Rotarians adjourned into their assigned committees to plan activities for the coming year.
Eric Iverson was introduced as a guest. Iverson is a 1995 graduate of Vermillion High School and is currently a student at the University of Minnesota majoring in international relations. He is an applicant for a Rotary International scholarship study in the Middle East, an aspiration derived from his recent U.S. Army experience, where he studied the Arabic language in addition to his airborne and intelligence work.
Rotary meets weekly on Tuesday noon at the Silver Dollar.
