In the first game the girls played the Black Hills Strikers from Rapid City. The Vermillion team took an early lead and won 15-3.

In the third game Vermillion played the Rapid City Flames, last year's second place team in the state fastpitch tournament. After leading the first four innings of the game the Flames took the lead and defeated Vermillion 4-6.
This is the first year Vermillion has had a team in the 18 and Under fastpitch division in the state tournament. The team performed very well and was given the third place seed to participate in the Midwest Regional Tournament in St. Paul, MN the weekend of July 25-27.
The Vermillion girls ended the regular season with a record of 19 wins and 9 losses.
This is the last season that all but two of these girls will play in the youth softball league. Some of these girls have played together as a team for the past 11 years, with the rest averaging six to seven years. Coaches Gary Prasek and Lauren Tolsma agreed that "it will be difficult to see the year end, as these have been a great group of girls to coach over the years."
The girls took second place in the 16 and Under, modified division, in the State Softball Tournament in 1996-1997 they were state champions.
