Team participates in fastpitch tourney The Vermillion Ford team participated at the South Dakota 1999 Junior Olympic Fastpitch Tournament July 16-17.
The team earned second place in the Girls 14 & Under Modified Division.
Vermillion first defeated Gregory II 8-4 on Friday, July 16. Tessa Tuetken started the game off with a single run home run. Whitney Tolsma pitched a complete game and had four strikeouts.
In second round action, the girls played at 8 a.m. Saturday morning against the Witten/Winner team. Vermillion was off to a quick 12-0 lead after the first inning. However, Witten/Winner fought back to pull ahead 13-12. Tolsma started, then Tuekten came in to finish the game.
The game went to international rules, due to time constraint, and the Vermillion Ford team won 17-16.
Third round game began at 8 p.m. Saturday night. Vermillion played Stotz from Yankton. Stotz jumped to an early 7-0 lead, however Vermillion fought back to win the game 12-11.
Vermillion went on to the semi-final game on Sunday at 2 p.m. Their opponent was O.P. Trucking from Canton. Ashley Bjorkman pitched the entire game.
Vermillion found themselves down 10-5 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, however, they "woke up the bats" and came away winners 11-10. That put them in the championship game.
O.P Trucking went through the consolation bracket to face Vermillion once again. They had to defeat Vermillion twice to be crowned state champions.
The first game O.P. won 14-11. The final game of the day went into eight innings, in which they had to play by international rules.
Carly Bernard started on second due to the rules, and Ashley Bjorkman hit Bernard in to go ahead in the game. However, O.P fought back and won the game 15-14.
