Variety on tap at Clay County Fair The Clay County Fair and Achievement Days in Vermillion opens Thursday, Aug. 5 and runs through Saturday, Aug. 7.
Highlights of the fair this year include the demolition derby on Friday, Aug. 6 at 7:30 p.m., an old time fiddlers competition at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7 and music by Sweetwater at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Even though Achievement Days don't begin until Aug. 5, activities at the fairgrounds will start Tuesday, Aug. 3, when entry and interview judging of all non-livestock 4-H projects will be held from 3-6 p.m.
On Wednesday, Aug. 4, exhibitors may enter their open class entries at the East Building from 6-8 p.m. All livestock exhibits are to be weighed and checked in on Wednesday from 6-9 p.m.
Thursday's Achievement Days schedule kicks off at 8 a.m. with the swine show. Entries will be taken from noon to 1 p.m. for the open class table setting contest and the poultry show starts at 1 p.m.
The 4-H livestock judging school will be held from 3-5 p.m. in the covered arena. Fashion revue practice will be held at 5 p.m. The exhibit buildings and commercial booths will be open to the public on Thursday from 5-10 p.m.
At 5 p.m., an open class and 4-H bake sale will be held at the 4-H Center. The open class horse show will be held at the fairground's arena beginning at 6:30 p.m. There is no admission charge.
Friday's schedule opens with the 4-H rabbit show at 8 a.m. The 4-H sheep show begins at 10:30 a.m. and the 4-H goat show is at 2 p.m. Exhibit buildings and commercial booths are open to the public from noon to 10 p.m.
Registration for the kiddie tractor pull begins at 4:30 p.m. with the event starting at 5 p.m. Friday's demolition derby begins at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday at the fair begins with the 4-H dairy show at 9:30 a.m. and the 4-H beef show at 10 a.m.
From noon to 1 p.m., exhibitors may enter the open class fruit pie and cookie contest in the East Exhibit Building. Exhibit buildings and commercial booths will be open to the public from noon to 10 p.m.
Mutton bustin' will be held at 3 p.m. and the old time fiddlers competition will be held at 3:30 p.m.
At 4 p.m., the 4-H round robin showmanship contest will be held, followed by 4-H livestock awards and state fair orientation. Free horse rides will be offered by the Vermillion Saddle Club from 4:30-6 p.m.
The community barbecue is from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Sweetwater will perform at 5:30 p.m., followed by the pie and cookie auction and free ice cream social at 6:30 p.m.
The 4-H Fashion Revue Public Style Show starts at 7 p.m., followed by the Youth Talent Contest at 7:30 p.m. The 4-H dance will feature music by a KG95 D.J. from 9 p.m. to midnight. Exhibit buildings and commercial booth buildings close at 10 p.m. Saturday night.
Livestock exhibits will be released from 6 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Aug. 8. Cleaning of buildings and grounds is scheduled from 12:30-3 p.m.
All 4-H'ers will be able to pick up their entries from 1-2 p.m., and the final clean up of non-livestock buildings begins at 2 p.m.
