Workers are going out on a ledge to restore courthouse Workers from Midcontinental Restoration Company, Inc. of Sioux Falls found themselves out on a ledge Monday, but it was all in a day's work. Employees of the company are using scaffolding, high pressure blasting equipment and other tools to restore the exterior of the Clay County Courthouse. by David Lias Employees of Midcontinent Restoration Company, Inc. of Sioux Falls have found themselves out on a ledge lately, but its all in a days work.

The firm was awarded bids last March to complete some much-needed tuckpointing work on the Clay County Courthouse this spring.

The firm began work on the buildings exterior approximately three weeks ago.

The Clay County Commission agreed that the work was needed after it received a report earlier this year from the architectural firm of Miller, Sellers and Heroux of Sioux Falls.

The report concluded that a well-needed facelift is in store for the courthouse. The county commission agreed to seek bids for the needed tuckpointing work.

The report included pages of close-up photos of the buildings exterior that show several areas of deterioration, and a need for new tuckpointing to help seal up the joints between the large, gray stones on the old, but still solid, structure.

The low bid offered by Midcontinental Restoration totaled $29,828, and came in much lower than those offered by three other bidders.

That compelled the county commission to table action on Midcontinentals bid until it could further research the experience and quality of work of the Sioux Falls firm.

The commission discovered that the firm has a good work reputation.

Other companies that offered higher bids for the work included Mike Kroger Masonry and Restoration of Dell Rapids, $49,564; Jones Caulking and Tuckpointing, Inc. of Sioux Falls, $52,500 and Halbritter, Inc. of Montrose, $49,330.
